<-- : Been staring at the screen for awhile, wondering what I should blog about. Then I realised that I had nothing substantial to blog about. Seriously, does anyone want to know what I did today? Or what I thought about my life? Or how much I loved summer? I honestly think that if I were a reader, I wouldnt give two cents on what was going on in my life. I mean, if I were my friend, sure I wouldnt mind reading about how much I was spending on dinners. But if I were some random stranger who happened to stumble into this blog by accident, I dont think I would read further on what I had to say. After all, there were more important things happening in this world than The Life of Candy Tay. Hmmm, but you know what? I think I dont really care whether if people cared about what I write in my blog. After all, this is my blog and I have the right to write whatever I feel like writing. I don't even need readers. And actually, it would be even better if there were none.. then this could be a private sanctuary for me to pour my heart and thoughts out. Speaking of rights. The most annoying thing happened to my friends and I yesterday. It was a bright sunny day and we decided to chill under the sun at Granville Island. This place is a famous tourist attraction - very relaxing in the summer, beautiful views and its just gorgeous to be there. And we were a bunch of Malaysians just sitting there, minding our own business and talking in our usual Manglish when this caucasian guy sitting on a bench behind us decided to discuss our use of English to his friend.. in English! Apparently, he thought that we were unfit to converse in English just because we spoke English with a Malaysian accent. He dared to wonder why we did not speak in our own mother tongue and spoke among ourselves in a language that we were seemingly not proficient in. To hell with him. I was highly offended when I heard this. I didnt exactly hear what he said. It was actually Suzz that overheard his conversation with his friend and later related the conversation to us. Honestly, if I had heard him, I would've told him off there and then. I mean, what right does he have to judge us? First of, he knows absolutely nothing about us. He doesnt know our history, our background, or anything for that matter. How dare he suggest that we were being pretentious by speaking English when we couldnt even master it. We could very well speak English with a Canadian accent if we wanted to. There was just no need for that because we were all Malaysians and of course it was more comfortable to speak in the language that we were most familiar with - Manglish. As for accusing us of not speaking in our mother tongue. What were we to speak other than Manglish?? I am most proficient in Manglish and Cantonese. And Suzz in Manglish and Hokkien. What else can we speak to create a conversation?? Honestly, I can barely express myself in spoken Malay. And I am sure a lot of other Malaysians would agree with me on that!! How dare that ignorant fool judge us like that. English is an INTERNATIONAL language! Just because we speak it with a Malaysian accent does not mean that we did not grow up speaking it! It does not mean that we are not proficient in the language!! A lot of Canadians I know can speak perfect English but cant even freaking spell or write! And actually, I think the guy is an American because he looks like a tourist, and no offence, but what he said sounded like an American thing to say. >< But ugh! It just pisses me off to hear something like that. I'm over it now but just thought I'd share my little encounter with the conceited caucasian who thought they owned the English language. >< New Blog! - Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009 Mon Bella - Tuesday, August 18, 2009 18 more days.. and counting.. - Monday, Aug. 10, 2009 - - Monday, Aug. 10, 2009 Random entry.... - Thursday, Aug. 06, 2009 |
